## What Hotel Kuura Is

Hotel Kuura is a fifteen-room boutique hotel on the road between Ivalo and Inari, five kilometres from Ivalo village and fifteen minutes from Ivalo airport (IVL), inside Western Europe's largest wilderness areas. It is the basecamp of every Nordic MICE journey. All winter the house hosts Nordic MICE groups: one warm room from the fireplace lounge to the restaurant, a full kitchen cooking Nordic food from Finnish ingredients, private meeting and workshop space, a wood-fired sauna, and the winter outside the door.

## The Name

Kuura is the Finnish word for the frost that settles overnight: on clear nights, as the cold comes down hard, tiny ice crystals form on every surface and leave a pale veil behind them. The house takes its name from it, and its colours from the way the fells turn in autumn.

## The Rooms

Two room themes named after Finnish landforms, set up around who is arriving: colleagues sharing a twin, a director travelling alone, a partner joining for the weekend. Both room images on the page are architects' visualisations, not photographs.

- **Kuru** (a sheltered valley) — ten rooms in soft linen and moss greens; nine sleep two, the tenth is a 25.5 m² family room.
- **Rakka** (a boulder field) — five rooms in darker earth tones and the burnt red of ruska; four sleep two, the fifth is a 24.0 m² family room.

Nine rooms at 15.5 m², two at 21.5, two at 20.0, and two family rooms with a double bed and a sofa bed each. Two more rooms can open into the room next door, a suite for a team lead or a family room for a partner and children. Wide oak planks, quartz worktops, Finnish-made furniture and beds, a linen-printed work by Nina Ekström in every room, and copper-toned rain showers.

## The House

A fireplace lounge with two seating groups, a restaurant of thirteen tables and thirty-two seats, and a bar counter on a flagstone floor, all in one open sweep of a room where the day's debrief runs into dinner. With the whole house yours, the dining room and lounge double as private meeting and workshop space, set up the way the agenda needs, and a wood-fired sauna closes the day. Through one door: snow to the treeline and northern lights when the time is right. No aurora is promised with any stay.

## The Table

Nordic food from Finnish ingredients, cooked from scratch in a full kitchen behind the restaurant. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are part of every journey, many of them over an open fire as part of the day's programme. Meals are written around the programme: a working lunch before the afternoon session, a long chef's dinner to close the journey, dietary needs handled without fuss.

## Around It

Kuura stands surrounded by some of the largest wilderness areas in Western Europe, the country every journey's days are built in. The nearest lake is Ujejärvi. Rivers for fishing in every season, Urho Kekkonen National Park within reach, Europe's northernmost ski resort at Saariselkä, gold panning, reindeer husbandry and aurora overhead. Winter brings snowmobile and husky safaris; spring, summer and autumn bring cycling, walking, trekking and paddling. For part of the summer the sun does not set.

Groups arriving via Rovaniemi, Levi or another Lapland airport are quoted a private transfer or an experience bus with activity stops on the way north.

## Who Runs It

Nordic MICE is the events arm of Xwander Nordic, a Lapland operator working out of Ivalo since 2014. The airport transfer, the guides, the vehicles, the electric snow-scooters and the aurora camp at Rahajärvi are its own, and the people who meet a group off the aircraft are the people who host its days.
